Sourcing planning
Learn how to request and compare China supplier prices at several quantity levels while keeping product, variation, packaging and price-basis assumptions visible.
A request for prices at more than one quantity can help a buyer understand planning options, but the numbers only become comparable when every quantity level refers to the same defined product. Keep the product configuration, variation split, packaging basis and open assumptions beside each quantity rather than comparing isolated figures.

Choose a small number of realistic quantities that reflect the decision you need to make: an initial test quantity, a planned order quantity and a larger future scenario, for example. Do not create a long grid of arbitrary numbers merely to request more price points. Each extra level should help you evaluate an actual option.
State whether the quantities are alternatives or phases of one plan. A supplier should not have to guess whether you want one of three quantities, all three quantities over time, or a total that will be split across several products.
For every quantity level, keep the selected model, material, finish, included components and product requirements clear. A comparison becomes misleading if the lowest quantity refers to a different material, different component set or a product without the details included in the higher-quantity option.
If you genuinely want two product configurations reviewed, create separate quantity tables for each. Do not mix a standard item and a customized item in one sequence of numbers without showing exactly where the product definition changes.
When a product has colors, sizes, bundles or designs, show how each total quantity is divided. A total of 1,000 units has a different operational meaning if it is one variation of 1,000 units or ten variations of 100 units. The variation split may be provisional, but it should be visible.
Ask the supplier response to identify the variation assumption used. If a different split is required for an option to be considered, keep that as a distinct proposal rather than silently changing the buyer’s quantity plan.
State whether the comparison uses plain product packaging, an existing retail package, a proposed custom package or an unresolved packaging choice. Packaging, carton mix and product protection can change alongside quantity, so they should not disappear from the price discussion.
Ask what the supplier number is intended to cover, and record the currency and product basis. Do not treat a marketplace display price, a price direction or a partial reply as an agreed offer. The aim is to compare the assumptions shown with each quantity, not to select the smallest isolated figure.
For each quantity, note the product reference, quantity and variation split, the packaging basis, the reply date, any stated assumptions and the items still to be confirmed. This allows a buyer to revisit the comparison when a sample, material or packaging decision changes.
Keep supplier responses in a common table, but preserve the original context. A number is not comparable simply because it appears in the same currency or on the same row; it must relate to a sufficiently similar product and buying condition.
After comparing quantity levels, identify the next decision: clarify a product detail, test one variation, review packaging, check a sample or narrow the quantity plan. Do not assume that a higher quantity always produces the best purchasing outcome without considering the product definition, timing, storage and remaining unknowns.
